This morning I'm sitting at a Starbucks across from UTEP. There is a nice strip of restaurants, etc. I'm having NY free birthday coffee courtesy of Starbucks. Thanks for all the birthday wishes.
It is a beautiful morning in El Paso. Not a cloud in the sky. It is 59 degrees with light winds. Frances and I are sitting outside, just enjoying the coffee, jazz and the air.
Frances and I had a nice talk with a rider named Sam this morning. Sam has a degree in Buddhist studies and gave the group a 101 talk a few days ago. I'm amazed and the diversity of background and experience if the risers on our trip. We have bonded nicely into a family like group and I find them to be wonderful companions. The sharing of close quarters and new experiences is an accelerator of team formation under such positive life experiences.
Today's ride is a short 57 miles to Ft Hancock. I'll find a way to get an extra mile so that I can get my birthday mileage of 58.
A great birthday.
Stopped for pastries at a Mexican market. If only I could find chiles like this at home.
At the end of the day, relaxing at Ft Hancock. Fun fact, in the movie Shawshank Redemption, the Morgan Freeman character crosses the border at Ft Hancock en route to meet the character Andy, played by Tim Robbins. Originally called Camp Rice, it was created around the time of the civil war to fight Mexican "bandits". It was renamed Ft Hancock after general Windfield Scott Hancock of the battle of Gettysburg fame.
Fun fact, sitting 10 feet from the school grounds we are allowed adult beverages because we are in church property.
