Columbus

After 92 miles we made it to the border town of Columbus, NM.  Here is the staff hauling our beds into the gym.

Today was a beautiful ride through the high desert of southern New Mexico.  We had almost no traffic except for the border patrol vehicles.  The views were stunning.  Due to rain there were abundant wild flowers.  The valley was wide and the light on the mountains was spectacular.  This is one of the most sparsely populated parts of the US that I have ever seen.

Tomorrow we visit a local museum to Pancho Villa and then cross the border into Mexico for lunch.  No riding.

I wish we had more time in New Mexico, but we will soon be in Texas and will remain there for almost three weeks.

On our rest day today we crossed the border info Palomas, Mexico.  It was a very easy trip over and back.  We had lunch, walked the streets and had a Margarita or two.  The city of Palomas is much more alive and vibrant than Columbus.  There was a rail line pulled from Columbus a few years ago and the economy here has suffered greatly.

We visited Pancho Villa State Park herd in Columbus and were all amazed at how little we knew about Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution.  Thanks to the head ranger at the park we all came away much better informed.

Tomorrow we are back on the bikes and on our way to El Paso.
