After 9 months of anticipation, our ride begins today. The weather looks marvelous as we anticipate our ride from the northern edge of Point Loma in San Diego to Alpine, CA. Its a short distance of only 42 miles, but that's a good plan for the first day. There will undoubtedly, be lots of mechanical issues with the 43 bicycles that have been disassembled, packed, shipped and reassembled in the last week. Additionally, there is a modest amount of climbing today. We will climb about 2000 feet as we go from sea level to tonight's camp site. This is not a lot of climbing, but most of us will be riding in weather that is 30 degrees warmer than we are used to, so that could be a factor. As an example, many routine rides that Frances and I do in HSV have twice this amount of climbing. On our big days in the Pyrénées, we will climb over 10,000 ft.
I'm looking at a beautiful moon hanging over the Pacific. I eagerly anticipate the star filled nights when we get to the desert.
Let's Roll!
The GPS route for this day has the feet of assent closer to 4K (includes all the intermediate bumps), with a net of 2K gain (comparing start & end elevations, but ignoring all the bumps in between ;-).
